A cane is a long, straight wooden stick with a hook at the end. The value of a cane as a weapon is the increased reach and space which it covers as compared with the hand, the great variety and diversity of motions that can be made. The cane can be carried anywhere and not perceived as a weapon.

The eku is an ancient weapon of Kobudo that originated from an oar. Eku techniques are similar to those of the bo staff. The eku has a displaced center of gravity and is heavier than the bo, and is thus considered more difficult to master.

The sai is a weapon found predominantly in Okinawa (there is evidence of similar weapons in India, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia). Sai are often believed to have originated as an agricultural tool used to measure stalks, plow fields, plant rice, or to hold cart wheels in place.

The bo is an ancient Asian weapon. It is a long hard wooden staff. A bo is a very practical self-defense weapon, and an excellent weapon to develop the upper body coordination and strength.

A nunchaku is two sections of wood connected by a cord or chain. Traditionally both ends are of equal length. Nunchaku training has been noted to increase hand speed, correct posture, and condition the hands of the practitioner.

The kama are weapons that resemble traditional farming devices similar to a scythe. Because the kama is a weapon with a blade it is somewhat different from other forms of kobudo weaponry.

The tonfa is a traditional weapon from which the modern side-handled police baton is derived. The tonfa traditionally consists of two parts, a handle with a knob, and perpendicular to the handle, a shaft or baord that lies along the hand and forearm.

This patch can be used for both sword or bokken. A bokken is a relatively safe substitute for a real blade in training for several martial arts. They are used in the early stages of training in Iaido, when a practitioner has not yet reached the level where use of a bladed sword would be safe.

Weapon Patches

Goshin presents weapons/kobudo patches that are attractive, yet tasteful enough to wear on any uniform - from the most traditional to the most progressive.

You can use these patches several different ways. Offer a special three or four week "weapons class" featuring the weapon of choice. Award the patch along with a "certificate of completion" when the student successfully completes the course. If you teach weapons on an ongoing basis, award the privilege of wearing the patch when the student has mastered their first form for that weapon. Or - come up with your own plan. Any way you use them, your students will be motivated by these visible symbols of their hard earned achievement, and will want to continue to earn these patches with diligent study.
